Mercedes-Benz launched the G-Model in 1979, developed with Austria's Steyr-Daimler-Puch and built in Graz, with a ladder frame, live axles and locking differentials that made it a serious off-roader for military and civilian buyers alike; the long-wheelbase station wagon added room for family duty.
