Mercedes-Benz launched the G-Model in 1979, developed with Austria's Steyr-Daimler-Puch and built in Graz, with a ladder frame, locking differentials and body-on-frame toughness aimed first at military and utility buyers. The long-wheelbase station wagon added family-sized practicality, and the basic design proved durable enough to stay in production for decades.
